Sleep Apnea Diagnosis & Treatment
At Cloverdale Crossing Dental Group, our dentists offer Surrey patients sleep apnea treatment to help them get a better, disruption-free sleep.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is a common sleep disorder that causes sufferers to have shallow breathing and even pauses in breathing during sleep. These pauses can occur as many as 30 times (or more) per night, and can be several seconds to a few minutes in duration. After each pause, normal breathing begins again, usually with a loud snort or choking sound.
As you might imagine, this can be extremely disruptive to sleep, and can cause a variety of health issues, including increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. It can also make arrhythmias (irregular heart beats) more likely, and can increase the chance of work- and driving-related accidents.
However, sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed, as it’s not something your doctor can find in a blood test, or diagnose during a regular check up. If a family member of bed partner has mentioned that you snore loudly, or sometimes stop breathing in your sleep, book a consultation with our team to determine if you have sleep apnea.
How can Cloverdale Crossing Dental Group help?
At Cloverdale Crossing Dental Clinic, we offer several sleep apnea treatment options for our Surrey patients. They type of treatment you ultimately undergo will depend on the severity and cause of your sleep apnea.
Mild Cases
Mild or moderate cases of sleep apnea can often be treated by very simple, non-invasive means.
Oral Appliances
Oral Appliances, also referred to as Jaw Advancing Devices (JAD) or Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD), are custom made mouth pieces that fit the specific shape of the patient’s teeth and mouth.
These appliances move the jaw forward, increasing the size of the upper airway, thereby reducing the air resistance that leads to sleep apnea and snoring. Oral sleep apnea appliances are most effective for patients with mild or moderate sleep apnea.
Weight Loss Management
Weight loss is another potential treatment option for patients suffering from milder forms of sleep apnea, as simply being overweight can sometimes cause sleep apnea.
We can help guide and monitor the weight loss process, perhaps in conjunction with other treatment methods, to help relieve the symptoms of your sleep apnea.
Severe Cases
Our sleep apnea specialist at Cloverdale Crossing Dental Group can provide referrals for patients suffering from more severe forms of sleep apnea.
Inspire Sleep
Inspire Sleep is a breakthrough implantable sleep apnea treatment option for people who either can’t use, or who can’t get consistent benefits from a CPAP treatment.
During sleep, Inspire monitors each breath the patient takes. Based on the patient’s unique breathing pattern, the system delivers mild stimulation to the nerve that controls the movement of the tongue and other key airway muscles. In this way, it keeps the airway open during sleep.
We work in conjunction with Inspire Sleep to get the treatment you need offering referrals for our patients.
