Dental sealants are applied help prevent cavities on children's permanent molars. Sealants are either clear or tooth coloured, so they 'seal' the surface of the tooth without being visible.
How are dental sealants applied?
The dental sealant will be 'painted' onto the chewing surface of the permanent molars by the dentist. The sealant is bonded into place, and it seals all the grooves where bacteria and plaque would otherwise collect, causing decay.
This procedure requires no anesthesia.
How long do dental sealants last?
If cared for properly, dental sealants can last for many years. However, the dentist can reapply the sealant if it wears off.
How can I tell if my child needs a dental sealant?
The dentist will asses your child's dental health during his or her regular check-up, and advise you about whether dental sealant is a good idea for your child.
Will my child need fluoride if she has dental sealants?
Yes. Dental sealants provide protection from decay only for the teeth on which they are applied. The rest of the teeth in your child's mouth will still require fluoride for optimal cavity prevention.
