Do you have to be a certain age to have dentures?

Do you have to be a certain age to have dentures?

You may wonder if you need to be a certain age to wear dentures, as many people associate these tooth replacements with the elderly. Our Cloverdale Crossing dentists explain how we'd figure out if this treatment is right for you.

Many people are missing some or all of their natural teeth for a variety of reasons. The ages of these people vary. If you are missing one or more teeth, depending on a number of factors, complete or partial dentures may be the best option for you. However, there are no age restrictions when determining whether you'd be a good candidate for dentures.

Today, we'll go over some of the reasons why many patients choose dentures at a young age, as well as what you can expect.

Why would I need dentures at an early age?

Over the last few decades, an increasing number of patients have chosen dentures to replace missing teeth for a variety of reasons. While some have poor oral health as a result of too many sugary treats as children or a poor diet today, others have tooth loss as a result of medical conditions.

Your dentist will conduct a comprehensive needs assessment for your unique situation. Certain patients prefer dentures over dental implants, which may be more expensive.

Are there any risks associated with dentures that I should be aware of?

Dentures are no more dangerous for patients in their 30s, 40s, or younger than they are for older patients. If you have tooth decay or gum disease, your dentist may recommend antibiotics to control bacteria in your teeth and gums that could otherwise enter your bloodstream.

Is there anything else I should know about receiving dentures at such a young age?

No matter your age, getting dentures is considered a major dental procedure due to the likelihood that some teeth will need to be extracted. As the supporting structure of the bone deteriorates, your facial appearance will change, resulting in a "caved-in" appearance.

If you lost teeth as a child, this change occurs while you are still a child. Dentures can assist you in maintaining the appearance of healthy skin and avoiding the sallow appearance caused by the absence of teeth behind the skin of your cheeks. Additionally, if the skin on your cheeks is smooth and well-supported, you will appear younger for a longer period of time.

You're likely to adjust more easily to your upper dentures than to your lower dentures. However, keep in mind that dentures can help you achieve better oral health regardless of your age when you receive them. Dentures can also help you speak more clearly, maintain an aesthetically pleasing smile, and maintain a healthy facial structure. Additionally, you may have an easier time eating.
