Our patients often ask us if their dental implants will feel like natural teeth. Implants are popular tooth replacements because they give wearers a very natural look and feel. But exactly how natural do they really feel?
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is implanted into the jaw to replace the root of a missing tooth. Titanium is biocompatible, which means the screw can fuse with bone, making it a solid foundation for the restoration that goes on top. The implant will be topped with a dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on how many teeth you need replaced.
How natural do dental implants feel?
Because dental implants are not alive, and don’t have any nerves in them to feel sensations, you won’t have any feeling in the implant itself. Any feeling you experience in relation to the implant will come from the surrounding gum tissue.
Other than that, dental implants look and function just like natural teeth. They are designed to blend in perfectly with the surrounding natural teeth, and you care for them just like you care for your natural teeth, too.
Once your implant has healed and you’ve had a few weeks to get used to it, you’ll find you hardly notice the difference at all.
