Soft Diet Options with New Dentures

Soft Diet Options with New Dentures

When you first get new dentures, it will take some time for your mouth to adjust to them. Here are a few soft food suggestions that will allow you to eat comfortably during this time, without being bored.

Plan Ahead

In the first days after your extraction and also after you are first fitted for your new dentures, you will need to subsist on a diet of soft or liquid foods as your mouth heals, and becomes accustomed to your dentures.

Many people look on these dietary limitation with trepidation, but this type of diet does not have to be boring! Planning ahead and having interesting meal and snack options at home and ready for you during this uncomfortable time is the key to continuing to eat a varied and tasty diet. It can really help to spend some time cooking and freezing your favourite soft meals, doing some menu planning, and making planned trips to the grocery store to stock up on supplies.

If you have to have teeth extracted, or have to go for a time without teeth as your dentures are prepared, you may not feel up to going out more than necessary; planning ahead will really help with this, too.

What foods should I eat?

Here are an extensive list of soft food options you can stock up before your appointment:

  • Pudding
  • Applesauce
  • Home cooked big-batch soups
  • Canned soups (if you prefer not to cook)
  • A variety of sauces
  • Vegetables (almost any vegetable can be cooked soft)
  • Leafy greens to cook down
  • Fruit juice
  • Low sodium vegetable juice
  • Smoothie ingredients
  • Eggs (which you can cook any way you please!)
  • Bananas and other soft fruits
  • Avocados
  • Regular or baked beans
  • Meats that you can cook soft, like fish or ground poultry
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Tofu
  • Muffins, pancakes, and waffles
  • Milkshakes
  • Oatmeal or porridge
  • Yogurt
  • Cottage cheese, ricotta, mascarpone
  • Icecream and custard (this is a good excuse to treat yourself...)
  • Hard cheeses for melting or shredding into dishes
  • Soft breads for dipping

Tools

You may find it helpful to invest in some of the following cooking tools as well, if you don’t have them already:

  • Blender
  • Juicer
  • Food processor
  • Immersion blender
  • Potato ricer

Preparing ahead of time with lots of soft meal and snack options can make those first few days with dentures a lot easier. Please feel free to contact our Surrey dental office any time for more advice!
